Consider being the leader at a symposium table.
During two Secondary Conference weeks, GE Secondary Level will receive extra emphasis. A number of secondary electives will be offered and participants who work with secondary students will take an hour and a half-long field trip to an Expo. At the Expo, experts will offer examples of how they implement each of the 17 practices in their subject areas and how they make their strategies age-appropriate for middle school, junior high or high school students.
GE is seeking secondary teachers (Middle School, Junior High, High School) to be the experts who are in the vanguard of implementers willing to polish their personal practice and then to share their expertise for the benefit of secondary teachers and students across the region.
Expo Set Up
Each expert or team of experts will be situated at a table labeled for their subject area. If for example, you teach social studies, you would be at the social studies table. As participants arrive in the Expo area, they will divide according to subject, so social studies teachers will go to the social studies table and math teachers, to the math table and so on.
Experts Lead the Discussion
Expo Experts will be prepared to lead the discussion of effective ways to implement the 17 GE practices and how to get to the depth of each practice and to its underlying principles. Experts will welcome questions and comments from participants but will also be responsible for keeping the discussion on topic and centered around Great Expectations at the Secondary level. The experts will provide examples of specific strategies for their particular secondary subject areas and offer samples of student work illustrating Great Expectations pedagogy. Experts will also promote networking among the teachers who assemble at their subject specific symposium table.
Expert Preparations
To prepare for Expo, experts should evaluate their personal practice and make notes on their implementation using the GE Modified Implementation Inventory, available online. Modified Implementation Inventory (Word Doc)
Modified Implementation Inventory (Adobe PDF).
Use the new version.Additionally, experts are asked to assemble artifacts to bring to Expo: student work, photos of students in action, teacher-generated materials, activities, etc. (Tables will be provided; experts will need to bring their own power cords and any additional equipment desired such as laptop, projector, or VCR.)Experts are urged to prepare a table-top display featuring innovative suggestions or topics of discussion for their table. They are also advised to provide a handout — a helpful, take home document — for participants at their table. The handout could contain instructions for a favorite project or activity, or it could be a summary of several important tips. The handout should include the expert’s name and contact information. The option will be available for experts to make their handouts available online through the Great Expectations website.
More Details...
Great Expectations Mentors and the GE Leadership Team will provide support to experts as they prepare for the Expo and assistance in setting up on the day of the Expo. Experts will be provided an estimate of the number of participants to expect at their symposium table.
Sincere Appreciation
The Expo Experts will be given a $250 appreciation bank card, and they will be honored for sharing their expertise with other secondary teachers and thereby with students!
